What does B-double truck access mean for an industrial site?

Not every industrial site can take a B-double, even if the surrounding road network allows them. The constraint is usually on-site: whether the yard is large enough, and shaped correctly, for a B-double to enter, turn and either reverse to a dock or pull through without a multi-point manoeuvre. This is typically assessed with a swept-path analysis, which models the exact path the vehicle's wheels and body trace through a turn.

Access also depends on whether loading happens at a raised dock or on-grade. Dock-based loading suits standard trailer heights and dedicated bays; on-grade loading (via a tail-lift or forklift into an open trailer) is more flexible for mixed fleets but needs more manoeuvring room around the vehicle itself. Combined with the approach route — corner geometry, street width and any height or weight restrictions nearby — these factors determine whether a site genuinely works for larger combination vehicles.

For transport, logistics and distribution operators, B-double capability is often a hard requirement rather than a nice-to-have, because it directly affects freight cost per pallet. It's a good example of a qualitative attribute — yard geometry, dock configuration, approach roads — that matters as much as headline building size when assessing whether a site truly fits an operation.
